DIRECT DRIVE AIR COMPRESSORS - Direct drive air compressors do not have a belt or pulley system, as they are powered by a crankshaft connected directly to the motor. The crankshaft's direct connection to the compressor causes the pump to rotate at the same speed as the motor. The most significant benefit to this design is its lack of wear parts.

BELT DRIVE AIR COMPRESSORS -
Belt-drive air compressors use a belt that connects the air pump to the motor. This belt turns when the motor operates, running the compressor's air pump. The pulley sizes the belt runs through in the pump determine the pressure and speed the air compressor can reach.

THREE PHASE AIR COMPRESSORS -
Three phase air compressors are for workshop, heavy duty and industrial use. The difference with a three phase compressor is it's power supply. It will run from a 415v 3 phase as opposed to the conventional 230v that you will find in your home.

PETROL AIR COMPRESSORS -
Petrol air compressors are the best way to get portable air due to the amount of draw on start up. They generally have quite a high air output and are ideal for use mounted inside vans or service trucks.

AIR HOSE -
An air hose connects the compressor output to the tool being used and can come in a range of lengths.

AIR FILTERS & REGULATORS -
A regulator regulates the air between your tank and the appliance you've connected the piping to. It's used mainly to lower the pressure so the specific application you use doesn't receive a higher pressure than it can actually handle.

AIR FITTINGS -
This is the part that fits on to a compressor, air hose or application and is applicable to both male and female fittings. The male thread is visible as it forms the connection whereas the female 'thread' is internal (within the fitting).

AIR COMPRESSOR OILS & ACCESSORIES -
Air compressor oils are used to grease mechanical components with the aim to prevent any damage from overuse and favouring air compression. There are two types of oil for air compressors: mineral oil and synthetic oil.

TANK SIZE - The bigger the tank the more air you can store and the less your motor and pump will have to work. Make sure whatever you buy will fit in the place you want to keep it.

MOTOR POWER - The bigger the motor, the quicker your compressor can build up air and the higher the level that air flow can be kept constant at.

VOLTAGE & AMPAGE - Make sure if you are buying a large Industrial Air Compressor that you buy the correct voltage, 400v is a three phase, electricity supply, so make sure you have this installed or are prepared to get it installed before buying. Some 230v compressors will run from a higher ampage (e.g. 16A, 18A or 32A) due to their motor size, this is not a big job to install, but will require an electrician if you do not already have it. 230v 13A can use a standard household 3 pin plug.

PISTON DISPLACEMENT & FREE AIR DELIVEY (F.A.D) - These are both measured in CFM, but piston displacement is the volume of air produced at the pump and the free air is the actual volume of air that the compressor will produce (F.A.D is usually around 25-30% lower than the piston displacement).
