It is vital that you have a smoke detector in your home as it could save your family in the event of a fire. This is particularly important at night whilst you are all asleep. Having a smoke detector gives your family a warning that that they need to get out of the house quickly and safely. Hundreds of people die in house fires every year and it is more common than you might think. This is why having a working smoke detector in your home is so important. It gives you that early warning that could save your lives. Most house fires occur at night when the occupants are asleep and as soon as smoke is detected, the alarm will sound its high pitched squeal and this will wake them up and give them a chance to get out. It is a good idea to have a smoke detector in every room, but if this is not possible, have 2 strategically placed in your home.
Once you have your smoke detectors, it is so very important to test them weekly to ensure the batteries are still working. This does not take long and is very simple to do, as a general rule you just need to press the test button. There is no point in having a smoke alarm and no working battery, that is about as much use as a chocolate teapot and not funny at all. I cannot stress enough the importance of ensuring your smoke alarms are working as this really could be the difference between life and death for you and your family.
